1. One Big Thing: National Carers’ Week is here - So is the need for their support
What’s Happening
National Carers Week is in full swing, running until October 19, and it serves as an opportunity to recognise, celebrate, and raise awareness about Australia's 3 million carers.
Why It Matters
With over 17,000 carers in the Toowoomba region alone who provide round-the-clock support for loved ones in some form, this backbone of our society is deserving of recognition.
Despite their incredible effort, the realisation of their contribution and the financial support needed for these carers is often forgotten, which is why local George Helon is leading a petition to push for better recognition and financial assistance.
By the Numbers
As of March 2024, the Carer Payment is $3.41 an hour, and the Carer Allowance is just 46 cents an hour
There were 2.65 million carers in Australia in 2021, which has grown now to over 3 million in just a few years
There are currently 17,635 carers in the Toowoomba region alone
Up to $126.2 billion is the estimated cost of replacing unpaid carers’ work
Local Impact
In this region alone, 2,370 are currently receiving the Carer Payment, and 4,970 are receiving the Carer Allowance, so it’s an issue that has far-reaching impacts in the now 180,000-person community, especially when you consider how many people they help.
What The People Say
“Carers deserve the same respect as paid support workers,” said Helon.

3. Celebrate Seniors Month at Grand Central
What’s Happening?
Grand Central is hosting a Seniors Expo on Wednesday, 23 October, and Thursday, 24 October 2024, at Centre Court on Level 1.
The event will feature a variety of providers focusing on aged care, health services, and community connection.
Older Queenslanders will have the opportunity to connect with local groups supporting them, all within the heart of Grand Central.
Local Impact
Grand Central’s Seniors Expo continues to strengthen ties between seniors and the local community.
By connecting older adults with health services, aged care providers, and retailers, the expo helps seniors access the resources they need to thrive.
